Arabs, under the guise of the olive harvest, approached the community of Rechelim in Shomron on Shabbat. The Arabs, from the nearby village of A-Sawiya, then attacked several members of a family who were strolling in their field with stones and boulders. One of the family members, a soldier who was home for the weekend from the northern border, fired towards the attackers.
Later reports from Arab media stated that one of the attackers was killed. In the footage disseminated on Arab media, the neutralized Arab and the other attackers are seen holding rocks. Both the Hamas and Fatah terror organizations separately issued announcements mourning for the "martyr." During the terrorist's funeral in A-Sawiya, his brother addressed the crowd, calling for the murder of Jews while holding a Hamas flag. Shortly after the funeral, the terrorist's brother was arrested for his incitement.
Yossi Dagan, the head of the Samaria Regional Council, who arrived on scene shortly after the incident, said: "I fully support the soldier who defended his own life and that of his family. His actions were in accordance with what is expected.” Dagan further stated, “The olive harvest is used as a ruse to obtain intelligence on security arrangements and attack Jews. We will not allow a massacre here like what took place in the south. I demand an end to the permissions given to Arabs to harvest olives in proximity to Jewish communities.” Emphasizing the severity of the situation, Dagan noted that he published his response to the events on Shabbat with special permission (a heter) from the Chief Rabbi of Samaria, Elyakim Levanon.
